Living In & With Peace

Reflecting upon Holy Week and particularly Resurrection Sunday, I hope that whatever feelings that have been evoked for you as believers are lasting. While we acknowledge, celebrate and rejoice during this time, we must remember that the price that Jesus paid was not just for one week of the year. I know that there are certain “rituals” that I do out of respect and love as well as a reminder of the sacrifice that the Lord Jesus Christ willingly made for us. This includes watching the movie versions of the stories that Christians have come to know so well: Moses, Jacob, David, The Ten Commandments and The Passion of Christ just to name a few. I also enjoy a “Good Friday” service that has seven different ministers speak on each of the 7 last sayings of Jesus as he was paying for our sin. And of course, church worship on Easter Sunday is an experience that I don’t like to miss.

What I hope that we understand from our Savior’s resurrection is that His life on earth was an example of how we should be living and although He was crucified, He rose on the third day as is written. The fact that He arose is the promise that everything He did while he was man on this earth is a blueprint for living. Jesus lived a peaceful existence. There is one scripture that describes a reaction that may not be peaceful, but shows how much Jesus respected God and His Father’s house, “So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves”(Mark 11:15). So no, I am not saying that he did not encounter trials along the way or have a violent, horrific death. What I am saying is that for the most part, His actions displayed that He had inner peace as well as responded in a peaceful manner. When you think about who He is and what He could do, but didn’t, should give us a lot to reflect on when it comes to our daily interactions with people and situations that are not pleasing to us.

Therefore, as we live on until we get to Holy Week in the year 2023 (God willing), think about the peace that sets your mind at ease and eliminates worry or fear. Jesus has given us that unconditionally. Since we can only control ourselves and if we desire to live more like Christ, mediate on the following verse:

Scripture: Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
