Today, my thoughts are focused on who you should communicate with when help is needed. I have learned the common use of the letters SOS which some believe means “Save Our Ship”, really have no meaning at all. Rather, it is a universal distress call using Morse code that is quick and easily remembered. Three dots, three dashes, three dots will signal help is necessary.
I came across another meaning for SOS which I definitely can support when thinking about the type of help we truly need – “Save Our Souls”. So who am I going to communicate my need for assistance particularly when I am afraid or fear danger? “The Lord!” Who is the only one that can save my soul? For me and I am sure other believers is “JESUS”!
This past Saturday, my husband and I were preparing for an afternoon of food and fellowship with his brother and sister-in-law. I wanted to get at least the towels washed because I decided that I would do the rest of the laundry on Monday. Anyway, I was walking down the hall to the laundry room when I saw something that I couldn’t identify quickly. It was on the floor along the side of a wall that had a door to where the electrical connections are and extended to the end of the wall leading to the kitchen area. The unidentifiable object was long and black and just seemed out of place. So, when I focused on the length (about two feet) I saw the snake’s head and the realization of what it was hit me and I screamed out to my husband, “Snake!” He ran towards me asking where and I had to stop him because he almost stepped on the tail end of the snake. All I could do is “jet” back in the bedroom because I knew that I couldn’t do anything to help him get rid of or kill the snake. Yes, I am a city girl living in the country. I don’t do snakes. So, the best thing I could do is get to praying for my husband who I knew was going to take care of it. I remember distinctly asking God to help my husband remove the snake without harm to himself. I even mentioned that I know snakes are creatures of God, but that all I could see is a serpent that had to be gone. After my earnest prayer I asked my husband was he able to kill it and unfortunately when he went to get something to dispose of it, the snake had disappeared. Although we had planned to enjoy our company outside, we let them know about the snake. So, when they had to use the bathroom I escorted them inside and basically was on the look out for the “evil one”.
Despite the unwanted visitor, we had a wonderful time as we usually do when we get together. The “devil” was not going to steal our joy! After they departed, my husband and I continued to be on “snake watch” because while we hoped that the serpent returned to where he entered which we think was from the crawl space up to the utility closet, we had the feeling that it wasn’t over yet. Lo and behold this morning one of our cats who is the hunter was in guard mode at the corner of a cabinet that is our beverage bar. My husband called to me to let me know that the snake had reappeared. This time with Sampson (our cat) cornering the snake my husband was able to get my mother’s baseball bat that we keep in her honor as well as why she kept it (added protection) and without sharing graphic details I’m sure you understand what peace of mind we have now. Yes, I stayed in the bedroom yet again praying, calling on the Lord’s assistance. Once the deed was done, we gave God praise for allowing us to sleep two nights as well as enjoy the past two days relatively calm and with peace. Of course, we gave the utmost thanks for providing assistance to my husband to defeat the devil. Having shared my testimony, I leave you with this verse to reflect on when you need to send out a SOS.
Scripture: Psalm 121:1-2
A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
