My title for today’s blog comes from the sermon that Reverend Creech preached yesterday on Father’s Day at Trinity Church of God in Allendale, South Carolina. My father, sister, husband and I started our Father’s Day Sunday attending service at my sister’s church. Since I knew that my topic for this blog would focus on Father’s Day, what better subject matter than highlights of the word of God that we heard and appreciated!
Father’s Day brings out different feelings for folks depending upon their own experiences. For me as a Christian and daughter the thoughts are two-fold: 1) “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12) and 2) A promise to spend Father’s Day weekend with my dad for as long as he lives and I am able to get to him. The scary part of the promise for me is that he told us he wants to live until he is 100 years old. God willing, he will be 85 in December and while I quite understand God has our appointed dates for “going home” – my father just might make it, but will I?
So, reflecting on the sermon and question, “What is a man?”, Reverend Creech used Psalm 8 with a focus on verse 4. The message given pointed to the origin of man (from dust), the origin of woman (from Eve made from Adam’s rib) and how men, woman and children should live according to God’s word. A man then must be the head of the household setting the example, making decisions with his wife at his side. Not with her in back nor in front of him – but, beside him as a help mate. Although man was made from dust which has no monetary value (it cannot be bought or sold), mankind has been made in God’s image so the value is really so much more especially when the inner light of God shines out!
My biggest takeaway from listening to the sermon and thinking about the importance of recognizing Father’s Day is men have such an essential role as the head of the family. It is interesting that in the secular world this would be debatable because the understanding is not coming from God’s word that is so crystal clear regarding the position of a man. While there was certainly other “food for thought”, I will share that Reverend Creech ended his sermon with the verse below found in the book of Joshua (a man of God) that will hopefully provide understanding for what a man will do for and with his family, thus “Giving God the Glory”.
Scripture: Joshua 24:15
“… But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
