Forgiveness

When I am thinking about something to write for my blog I reflect on the readings from my daily devotion with God as well as any theme or topic that comes to me repeatedly. As I have stated in an earlier blog, the Trinity means a great deal to me because I truly believe that the number 3 is significant as it is with the belief that God (the Father), Jesus Christ (the Son) and the Holy Spirit play an integral part of who we are and what we do if we have used our free-will to acknowledge and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

That being said, I am writing about forgiveness because actually this morning the subject of forgiveness came to mean in three different ways: 1) Our Daily Bread (90-Day Introductory Edition – Day 68), 2) A poem, “Making Many Mistakes Misalign Messiah’s Message” (in McClain Meditation Moments) and 3) it was brought up by my sister in conversation today. I didn’t want to write anything about the unfortunate incident that occurred between Chris Rock and Will Smith; however, I am hoping that those who are Christians are sharing what God says about the matter if discussion of it comes up in their presence.

Yes, I mean it – what God says is, “Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” (Colossians 3:13) I do believe that Chris Rock demonstrated that by not engaging physically as well as not pressing charges against Will Smith. It is quite obvious, at least to me, that after the occurrence Will Smith realized that there were so many other approaches that he could have taken. What he did was a gut reaction to what he heard and was feeling about his wife’s condition. This was not a response, but a reaction. Should there be consequences for his action. As an educator and basically a person that knows that there are always consequences both good and bad for what we do, absolutely. Keeping in mind that whatever those consequences are, they should be aligned with whatever happened.

At this point, all the jokes and Monday morning quarterbacking needs to stop (see 2 Corinthians 2:7) and Ephesians 4:32). How can it? I am praying and trusting that there are other human beings that understand that everyone makes mistakes as well as that they vary in the degree of severity. Does all the joking and recapping help a person who has done wrong redeem him or herself? I acknowledge that while Smith’s action may never be forgotten; it certainly can be forgiven and not just by Chris Rock, but by everyone. I hope the verse below will help in understanding the need for compassion for both Chris Rock and Will Smith and most of all forgiveness for Mr. Smith.

Scripture: John 8:7

So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
